Privacy Policy
Last updated September 11, 2026
Black Box Fragrances (“Black Box,” “we,” “us”) is a controlled beta product built by Tyler and Garrett. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have. It applies to blackboxfragrances.com and the account features described below.
Information we collect
- Your email address — used only to send a one-time sign-in code and, if you choose, product updates. We never store or see a password: sign-in is a one-time code emailed to you.
- Your Scent Profile — your answers to the taste quiz, and the profile derived from them. If you complete the quiz before creating an account, your answers stay only in your browser until you sign up, at which point they’re saved to your account. Once saved, your Scent Profile (the derived summary — preferred/avoided scent directions and dimension ratings, never your raw quiz answers) is shown publicly on your account’s profile page, alongside your display name — see “What we never do” below for exactly what that does and doesn’t include.
- Your collection, ratings, and reviews — which fragrances you’ve marked as owned, tried, wishlisted, or rated, any thumbs-up/down feedback you give on a Match Score, Bottle Check verdict, or recommendation, and any review you publish on a fragrance page. Your written reviews are public and attributed to your display name; your owned/tried/wishlist marks and thumbs-up/down feedback are not shown to anyone else.
- Display name — an optional name shown on your profile; never your email address.
- Missing-fragrance reports — the brand/name you submit when a fragrance isn’t in our catalog yet.
- Basic usage analytics — anonymous or account-linked events (e.g. which page led to a sign-up, which pages you visit, how long you spend, what site or search referred you, and simple actions like wishlisting or marking a fragrance as tried/owned) used to understand what’s working, never sold or shared with advertisers. As of September 2026 this includes PostHog and Google Analytics, two third-party analytics tools — see below. We never send either of them your quiz answers or preferences, your star ratings, or your written reviews, and we never link their data to your real account identity — both only ever see an anonymous, randomly-generated id, never your email or account.
- Technical data — standard server logs and error reports (via Sentry) that help us find and fix bugs. We do not use this data to build an advertising profile of you.
What we never do
- We never sell your personal information.
- We never show your owned/tried/wishlist marks, your thumbs-up/down feedback, or your raw quiz answers to another user — those stay private to your account. Your published reviews and your Scent Profile summary, by contrast, are public and attributed to your display name (see above) — never your email address or any other account detail.
- Your Match Score and Bottle Check verdicts are calculated fresh each time you view them from your own saved data; we don’t store a history of every score you’ve ever seen.
- A shared Scent Profile link (a separate, optional feature from your account’s public profile page — see “Your choices and rights” below) never shows your email address, account details, or display name — only the summary you’re choosing to hand out, and only for as long as you leave that link turned on.
Third parties we work with
- Resend — delivers your sign-in emails.
- Fragplace (“Fragrance API”) — supplies the fragrance catalog data (names, notes, brand info) you see in search and on fragrance pages. We fetch this live rather than keeping our own bulk copy of their catalog. We’ve worked with more than one catalog data provider as the product has evolved (an earlier provider, Fragella, is kept configured as a fallback but is not currently used) and may do so again.
- Sentry — receives error reports when something breaks, so we can fix it. This can include the page you were on and non-identifying technical details; we don’t send it your fragrance data.
- PostHog — receives anonymous usage data: the pages you visit, how long you spend, what site or search referred you, and a small set of named events (e.g. that the quiz was started or completed, that an affiliate link was clicked, that an account was created, or that you wishlisted or marked a fragrance as tried/owned — action and fragrance name only, never a star rating or written review) so we can understand what’s working. We never send it your quiz answers, preferences, star ratings, written reviews, email, or account identity, and we never link its data back to your account — every event carries only an anonymous, randomly-generated id.
- Google Analytics — receives standard, anonymous traffic data (which pages you visit, and which site, search, or link referred you here) so we can understand where visitors come from. We don’t send it any of the account, collection, quiz, or review data described above, and we don’t use it for advertising.
- Vercel and Neon — host the application and database, respectively.
Your choices and rights
From your Profile settings, at any time, with no need to ask us first:
- Export a copy of everything we hold about your account as a JSON file.
- Delete your account and all associated data — this is real, immediate deletion, not deactivation. Deleting your account also immediately removes your Scent Profile from your (now-deleted) public profile page.
- Turn an anonymous, no-name-attached Scent Profile share link on or off, at will — a separate feature from your account’s own public profile page, which always shows your saved Scent Profile once you have one (see above).
If you’d rather we do this for you, or have any other question about your data, email support@blackboxfragrances.com.
Children’s privacy
Black Box Fragrances is not directed to children, and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes to this policy
Black Box is currently in a controlled beta, and this policy may change as the product does. We’ll update the date at the top of this page when it does; for material changes, we’ll also try to let signed-in users know directly.
